Buffalo Soldiers Daylong Events and Activities
Saturday, Aug. 17, 10 am-8 pm, throughout the Lodgepole and Giant Forest areas of Sequoia National Park. Activities every hour throughout the day. Guided hikes, tours, booths and displays, living history and reenactments, questions and answers, photo opportunities, and more. DARK SKY FESTIVAL (SEE COMPLETE SCHEDULE)
Friday-Saturday, Aug. 23-24, at various locations throughout Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks including the foothills area, Mineral King, Giant Forest, Lodgepole, Grant Grove, Cedar Grove, as well as Lake Kaweah in Three Rivers. This is the largest festival dedicated to celebrating the night sky in Central California. The sixth annual event features a lineup of over 50 programs from which to choose at several venues, including walking tours, stargazing, guest speakers, movies, musical performances, and so much more. As most of the world’s population lives with artificial light pollution, the Dark Sky Festival aims to educate people about the importance of preserving natural darkness and inspire them to take action in their own communities. COMMUNITY CHIPPING DAY
Saturday, Aug. 24, 7 am-noon, Lions Arena, North Kaweah River Dr., Three Rivers. Partnering with Three Rivers Lions Club, the Three Rivers Fire Safe Council co-hosts the first Community Chipping Day in Three Rivers. Pay attention to the following GUIDELINES: Material to be chipped must be clean green waste such as brush and tree limbs. Branches may not be larger that 7 inches in diameter. Here’s what’s NOT ALLOWED: Small twigs, trash, rocks, metal, processed lumber, leaves, grass clippings, vines, fruit/nut tree trimmings, oleander, palm trees, yucca plants, or poison oak.
